Technically our fundamental role is to design, develop and test structural arrangements, systems and proposals prior to their construction.

Engineers have many tools at their disposal to do this including physical models and hand calculations as well as virtual models than can be analysed by computer. Modern software applications using finite element analysis allow us to engage with increasingly complex forms.
