SPACE TRUMPET
Artist: Conrad Shawcross
Client: Unilever
This kinetic sculpture hangs from a suspended walkway in the atrium of Unilever’s London headquarters. The sculpture silently changes position at noon each day – continually refreshing the composition for the people that use the building.
The structural system is designed on the principle of a mobile; equilibrium being maintained as the four trumpets rotate about horizontal and inclined axes. The primary materials used are plywood, oak and steel with large diameter bearings fabricated from oil-impregnated nylon.
Close collaboration was essential to find design solutions that satisfied the artistic intent and met the requirements for structural stability.
