NERVOUS SYSTEM (INVERTED)
Artist: Conrad Shawcross
Client: Pace Wildenstein Gallery
Following on from the success of Chord, the artist here develops his series of rope making machines in a site specific work for the IBM building on Madison Avenue, New York.
All structural design and fabrication drawings were carried out by Structure Workshop. The machine has a diameter of 7.5m and uses oak and aluminium as the primary structural materials. Redundancy in the overhead structure and fatigue in the aluminium components were key design considerations.
Arups ATR provided a mechanical engineering overview for the machine, which includes over 5000 parts and was fabricated in the artist's workshop.
