FLOATING WORLD
Artist: Simeon Lockhart Nelson
Client: Birmingham New Hospitals Project
This sculpture is to be suspended in the foyer of a new hospital in Birmingham.
The structure comprises 6 profile cut intersecting planes with additional rolled elements. In detail the edges form a delicate organic fretwork and the resulting form is reminiscent of dense foliage.
Significant difficulties exist in reducing the weight to acceptable limits whist producing a design that is practical to fabricate, transport and assemble on site. It is proposed to water-jet cut the shape from 6mm and 4mm thick aluminium plate. This method produces a good finish and eliminates heat distortion associated with alternative processes such as laser cutting.
